A Boxing Scribes Night With The UFC
By Matthew Hurley: In its infancy the world of mixed martial arts that I would see late at night on ESPN held no interest for me. I found it to be slap-dash and amateurish and subsequently ignored its refinement over the years.
After losing in his bid to claim the WBC welterweight title from Floyd Mayweather in 2007 Ricky Hatton finally came to the reasonable conclusion that he was not and never will be comfortable at 147 pounds.
If Joe Calzaghe is indeed done fighting after last Saturday’s bout against the aged Roy Jones Jr. in New York, then 2008 will have seen two long standing world champions make their exits from the sport unbeaten. However, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will have made his exit with far more prestige bestowed upon his name than the thirty-six year old Pride of Wales.
Joe Calzaghe did what was expected of him this past Saturday when he dominated the badly faded Roy Jones Jr. The difference between these fighter’s capabilities at this stage in their career is staggering.
